Shanxi Province covers an area of 156,700 square kilometers, accounting for 1.6 percent of China’s total area. The province stretches 682 kilometers from north to south and 385 kilometers from east to west. The province belongs to the loess plateau, with the layout boundary of a parallelogram slanting from north-east to south-west. Mountainous region and hills make up 80.1 percent of the whole province while the figure for plains and valleys is 19.9 percent. According to the sixth national population census, there are 35.71 million permanent residents in the province, among which 0.3 percent are ethnic minorities, including Hui, Man, Mongol, Yi, Miao and Tujia, etc. Shanxi’s economy saw over 10 percent annual growth in the past three decades but its growth has slowed down as the province is determined to upgrade economic structure and accelerate reforms. From 1991 to 2012, the province’s average annual growth reached 11.2 percent. Its gross domestic product (GDP) stood at 1.28 billion yuan in 2014, and the growth rate slowed to 4.9 percent. The province’s growth ranked the 24th among the 31 provinces and autonomous regions on the Chinese mainland in 2014.
